Benefits For disabled people and their carers.

DISABILITY LIVING ALLOWANCE (DLA)

You can claim if:

You are under 65 AND you have been like this for the past 3 months or more.
You also have to show that your difficulties are likely to last for at least 6 months from the time you claim.

DLA has two parts (components) - the CARE component and the MOBILITY component.
You can get both components if you qualify for both, or you can get just one.
It can be paid whether you are working, unemployed or studying.

The CARE component

There are 3 different rates of payment:

The HIGHEST rate - if you find it difficult taking care of yourself day AND night.
The MIDDLE rate - if you find it taking care of yourself day OR night/
The LOWEST rate - if you find it difficult taking care of yourself for part of the day, or if you are over 16 and cannot prepare a cooked meal for yourself.

You can claim if you live alone of with other people.

The MOBILITY component

There are 2 rates of payment:

The HIGHER rate -
If your walking outdoors is very limited by severe discomfort (pain or breathlessness) OR
You cannot walk at all OR
It is dangerous for you to walk (e.g. a heart condition) OR
You are deaf and blind and cannot get around without help OR
You have no feet OR
You are severely mentally impaired AND you have severe behavioural problems AND you qualify for the highest rate care component.

The LOWER rate -
If you can walk but cannot find your way on unfamiliar routes without guidance and supervision (e.g. poor eyesight, learning difficulties)
